It appeared the roster spot would be safe for Patriots veteran tight end Daniel Fells at least until star Rob Gronkowski returned to action, perhaps in late September. But appearances can be deceiving – NFL.com is reporting that Fells has been waived.
Fells signed a three-year contract with the Patriots last season for $5.25 million, but caught just four passes in 13 games The team has apparently determined that Michael Hoomanawanui can handle the job until Gronkowski returns.
NFL.com is also reporting that the Patriots are considering activating Gronkowski from the PUP list before the season opener despite his likely unavailability for a few weeks.
